Feature length film
Documentaries can transport us to unfamiliar lands and illuminate uniquely fascinating cultures. Take a trip to Rwanda through the timeless words of Shakespeare in the only feature-length film in this year’s festival. Skip the cineplex, the future of independent film is right here!
Eccentric Ivy League professor emeritus Andrew Garrod travels to Rwanda, seeking to mount a production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with local students from both Hutu and Tutsi backgrounds. Twenty years have passed since the horrific Rwandan genocide that left 1,000,000 Tutsis dead. Predominantly orphans, the cast of young Rwandans, led by a stunning, strong-willed Juliet, tackle their country’s past and their own futures as hopes, expectations, personalities and cultures collide as opening night approaches.
