Gather in person with documentary filmmakers from around the Pacific Northwest in this one-day event.

Through different sessions, you'll have the chance to meet, connect and listen to:

Lulu Gargiulo is an award-winning cinematographer and filmmaker. She has shot dozens of commercials, music videos and documentaries, including short docs for the Children’s Research Institute; the PBS drama, The Year of My Japanese Cousin; PBS mini-series, The Meaning of Food and the Emmy winning PBS short, The Crossing Guard. In addition to shooting, Lulu also produced the feature length documentary 47 Views of Leslie Laskey, which aired on the KCTS/PBS series Reel NW, several short docs for the Seattle Channels-Art Zone and the documentary, Howdy Pardner-Tales of the Cowboy Hat Visit her website here.

ANIMATORS:

Drew Christie is an Award winning animator and filmmaker. He has created work for The Criterion Collection, The New York Times, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, PBS and AppleTV+. Check out his work on the Hulu doc series, Sasquatch

Mari ichimasu is a Seattle artist from Japan specializing in stop-motion animation, watercolor illustration, and comics. Currently, she is on a long journey of making a stop-motion animated short film called Sanpomichi which is deeply inspired by her grandmother and aunt in Tokyo.

Webster Crowell is a filmmaker and animator (primarily stop-motion) who has directed multiple short and feature length projects. His Web series 'Rocketmen' is a live action adventure series and homage to vintage special effects, his recent experimental short 'Bad Neighborhoods' is currently touring festivals.

EDITORS:

Ali Scattergood is a Seattle based Documentary Filmmaker and Photographer, with a focus in Directing and Editing. Ali has over a decade of experience working in both production and post production teams including films for Ken Burns, A&E Networks, Netflix, Hulu, Nat Geo Wild, and Discovery. Recently, Ali directed and edited two independent documentary films "Climate Diaries; Heathers Story" a short film about the climate crisis which in 2022 won Best Short Documentary, Best Female Director, and Best Cinematography in multiple festivals. Her other documentary "Healing Waters", is a feature length film about the life and work of renowned photographer Linda Troeller. Healing Waters is set to screen in the 2023/2024 festival circuit. Dina Guttmann began editing documentary films in 1996. She specializes in bringing characters to life. Whether it be the King of Nepal in National Geographic Special’s The Last Royals, the mother and son duo who hand-craft artificial eyes in POV’s A Healing Art, or the flamboyant Mexican wrestler Cassandro in The New Yorker Presents’ The Man Without a Mask, Dina creates emotional connections between audiences and the characters who embody these stories. Erik Dugger has edited many documentaries over the last decade that include Little White Lie, The Growing Season, Screenagers, and Supergirl. He was also the supervising editor of the Peabody Award-winning Don't Tell Anyone. Erik’s work has screened at film festivals including Slamdance, DOC NYC, and the Hamptons International Film Festival. It has also been featured on the Sundance Channel, the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, A&E Biography, as well as PBS’s Independent Lens and POV series.

COMPOSERS:

Amy Denio (Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame) is an award-winning musician based near Seattle, Washington. She is an accomplished composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, improviser, record producer and recording engineer. Denio has completed dozens of commissions and grants to compose for modern dance, film and theater, multi-media performances, and television. To date, she has created over 600 works and has produced recordings in collaboration with artists all over the world. She operates Spoot Music, her record label, publishing company and recording studio. Her film commissions include three scores for short silent films by female filmmakers, produced onto DVD and distributed by KINO LORBER; the soundtrack for 12-piece chamber ensemble for the 84-minute silent film Variete (1925), commissioned by the Seattle Theater Group for their annual presentation at Seattle’s Paramount Theater, the soundtrack for Jamie Hook’s feature film The Naked Proof, which premiered at Cinerama for the Seattle Film Festival, sound scores for Pangaea's Brood and Synchrony in Estrus, two stop-motion animated films by Thomas Edward, and a compelling documentary on 9/11 by Biljana Tanurovska. Christi Clay, owner of Beneath the Trees Music and Wareing Music, likes to call herself “the accidental music publisher”. Having spent the first 12 years of her professional career working in tech corporations, she has now spent the last 9 years in the music industry working with composers and managing music catalogs for sync licensing. She works with a talented roster of composers whose music has been licensed countless times across reality television, scripted television, film trailers, short and full length documentary films, national and international ads for TV and radio, NFTs and across all social media platforms. She regularly consults with other music publishers and music houses about sync royalty collection and distribution and serves as Treasurer on the board of the Portland chapter of Women in Film. She has a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Masters degree in Organization Design and Systems Renewal, and holds a PMP certification. When she’s not whipping music catalogs into order, pulling music for film projects or managing her children’s play schedules, you can find her in the forest. She’ll be the one in the hammock, reading and trying not to spill hot tea on her lap.

Tara Forth (she/her) is a composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and sound designer who serves as President of the Seattle Composers Alliance. Her portfolio of work includes film scores and custom commercial music. In addition to musical experience and training, Tara's proficiency in creative direction, content strategy and marketing makes her a valuable partner in crafting impactful and memorable audience experiences. Her recent projects include feature documentaries such as Healing Waters, Punderneath It All, and the 'Making Of' APOSTASY (BAFTA-nominated feature film). She has also scored numerous short films including a recent series on climate change, and many corporate videos for global clients. Tara studied music at the University of Wisconsin at Parkside, performing on trumpet in the Wind and Jazz ensembles. Visit her website here.

Misael A. Martínez Melo is an independent documentary filmmaker and the owner of MediaRoom, a media production company located in Olympia, WA. Born in Puerto Rico, he was raised in both Borikén (the Taino name for Puerto Rico) and Kiskeya (the Taino word for the Dominican Republic). His career started as an editor and motion graphics artist back in the tail end of the "videotape" era. Eventually, he transitioned into cinematography and directing work, featuring projects for non-profits, corporations, music videos, and government.His cultural roots play a significant role in his documentary work, which highlights issues of food justice, colonialism, and art. In 2022, he premiered "Raíces," a documentary about food sovereignty in Puerto Rico. When not working on documentaries or commercial film projects, Misa serves as the President of the Seattle Documentary Association (SeaDoc), teaches production workshops, and supports his peers at the Olympia Film Collective. His favorite hobby? Dusting-off his old-school DJ skills to play retro dance music on vintage turntables.

We have limited spots available for attendees to meet one-on-one with a professional documentary film editor during the event.
