Seattle Documentary Association is proud to present a conversation featuring documentary directors Dr. Gilda Sheppard and Elliat Graney-Saucke, in conversation about the premiere of Sheppard's feature SINCE I BEEN DOWN and Graney-Saucke's current production BOYS ON THE INSIDE. Both projects have been long-term labors of love that lift up the voices of communities and individuals impacted by incarceration and the interconnected elements of racial oppression, poverty and addiction, as well as personal triumph and internal paths to liberation. In this moment of both social uprising as well as isolated stillness, concepts of community, time/process, change and authenticity are all worthy of our attention. Please join us for this discussion and the celebration of the premiere of SINCE I BEEN DOWN, a true triumph of cinematic virtue and Black brilliance that speaks depths to essential histories of the Pacific Northwest.
SINCE I BEEN DOWN tells the dramatic story of how in America’s backyard, a community held captive by racist policies targeting gangs and drugs, sacrificed their youth for a false sense of safety and prosperity. Nearly forty years later, the true path to freedom now is led from inside their prison walls. This is a story told in the voices of those who are living it.

BOYS ON THE INSIDE follows three formerly incarcerated Latinx 'boys' and a white queer femme documentary filmmaker over a decade, as triumph, tragedy and new chapters of life bring everyone's stories together in ways no one could ever have anticipated.
