DocForest 2019

The Seattle Documentary Association (SeaDoc) is excited to relaunch DocForest —a weekend retreat for documentary and non-fiction storytellers, taking place at Icicle Creek Center for the Arts in Leavenworth, WA. Engaging in the current landscape of doc films, various technical best practices, ethical discourse in storytelling, and much more, this weekend will be enriching for a wide range of media makers and industry professionals.

Program concentrations:

Broadening the Industry: Geographic Equity. LTR: Long Term Relationships/Projects and Self Care. Editing/Post-Production Best Practices. Choose Your Own Adventure: Nature + Social Hangs. Works in Progress: Engaging with Process. Sustainable Storytelling: Bridging community, impact, money, and mental health. Distribution Strategies & Opportunities.

The retreat begins with Dinner and Evening Programming on Friday evening, a full day of programming on Saturday, including a Choose Your Own Adventure and evening Keynote, and ends on Sunday late afternoon with Closing Session and Giveaways! 

All meals will be provided by outside catering. Dietary restrictions will be addressed in food menu (make sure to let us know your needs when you register). Bedding is provided in the shared cabins on and near by the Icicle Creek Arts Center campus where DocForest is taking place. All you need to bring is yourself, personal items (clothes for all weather, pajamas, toiletries/extra towel, a hammock if you want) and any promo materials for your work. 

DocForest is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to network, share your projects and recharge your creative energies through validation and community building.

Our fast and furious icebreaker is a great way to kick off the weekend and start meeting your fellow media makers. Prepare to share your 1 minute elevator pitch for a current or dream project with fellow DocForest attendees.

6:30pm – 7:30pm Dinner

7:30pm – 9:00pm OPENING PROGRAM & CEREMONY

Opening Ceremony with members of the Wenatchi Tribe for a land acknowledgement followed by presentations by outstanding local production companies so we can get better acquainted with those east of the mountains!

9:00pm BONFIRE

Talking about the LTR aspects of long-term documentaries, ways to take care of yourself through challenges that come up personally and professionally throughout creative process.

11:30am – 1:00pm EDITING / POST PRODUCTION BEST PRACTICES

Panel discussion with editors and industry professionals who will hash out their best practices, tips and thoughts on editing and building story specific to documentary filmmaking.

2:00 – 4:00pm CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

We want you to take advantage of this opportunity to unplug and experience the landscape! We’ll have a guided hike or folks can access our hammock hangout area, lay in the grass and chat, journal, or nap. Do you.

OR, this is a time to self-initiate discussions / workshops you want/need, such as: people of color only space for doc media makers, ethical dilemmas in interviewing subjects, motherhood/parenting in filmmaking, creating a meditation space, etc. This time is yours!
